STEP - NCIDQ Exam Preparation
ASID has long recognized the key role that the NCIDQ examination
plays in design practitioners’ career plans. Passage of this
rigorous test signifies the hallmark of professionalism in the
interior design community, and alerts the public to the
expertise and experience of the designer who has met this
challenge. To that end, ASID created the STEP program to provide
a broad perspective of the issues and information pertinent to
the NCIDQ exam.
The STEP workshop is periodically conducted nationwide and is
comprised of 20 hours of instruction over a 2 1/2-day period.
Participants have the opportunity to experience practice exams
patterned after the newest NCIDQ and, with the guidance of
experienced instructors, determine which areas require further
preparation. Workshop participants are provided with a
comprehensive workbook that includes practicum exercises and
multiple-choice sections similar to those in the NCIDQ exam.
These practice tests are administered and thoroughly reviewed
during the workshop. The workbook also includes helpful practice
exams that participants may take home with them.
Participants are encouraged to have their STEP workshop
experience 4 – 12 months prior to taking the NCIDQ exam. This
allows sufficient time for resources to be acquired and skill
areas requiring further preparation to be fully studied.
Registration deadlines are listed after each workshop along with
a registration form. Please note that space is filled on a first
come/first served basis so to ensure a spot you should return
your registration sooner rather than later. There is the
possibility that a workshop will be cancelled if we receive less
than 8 registrations by the deadline.
The next STEP class in CT will be held on Jan. 23-25, 2009 @ the
University of New Haven in preparation for the April 3-4, 2009
NCIDQ Exam. The deadline for first-time applicants for the
Spring exam is Dec. 10, 2008. All supporting documents must be
received by this date. The registration deadline for all other
applicants is Feb. 1, 2009. Please contact Sara Hopkins,
sara@ sarahopkinsInteriors.com if you are interested in
signing up for the January STEP class. |

ASID Foundation Announces New Partnership with
Rebuilding Together
As part of a new Foundation partnership, ASID members will
renovate a veteran’s home in the Washington, D.C. area under
Rebuilding Together’s Veteran’s Housing Initiative.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 10, 2008) – Just in time for Veteran’s Day,
the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Foundation is
pleased to begin a partnership with the Rebuilding Together and
their Veteran’s Housing Initiative. Rebuilding Together is the
nation’s leading nonprofit working to revitalize communities and
provide free rehabilitation and critical repairs to the homes of
people in need. As one of the leading professional societies
within the built environment, ASID has an opportunity to connect
its membership and its design expertise to Rebuilding Together to
make a difference.
The Veteran’s Housing Initiative works to provide housing remodels
and repair services for retired and active service men and women.
Often this includes providing accessibility modifications for
veterans wounded in service to our country and transforming their
home into a comfortable and safe environment. Specifically, the
ASID Foundation will launch a pilot project in the Washington,
D.C. area and, with the help of volunteers from the ASID
Washington Metro Chapter, will renovate the home of a deserving
veteran. The project is expected to be completed by April 2009.
“The ASID Foundation is proud to honor the service of our veterans
and bring universal design to those who need it most,” says Jack
Pruitt, director of development for the ASID Foundation. “For
designers looking for a way to give back to their community, this
is an excellent opportunity to match their services and expertise
with the needs of the brave men and women that protect our
country.”
In addition to the pilot project, an awareness campaign will be
rolled out to ASID chapters across the United States to inform
ASID members about the partnership and encourage them to lend
their time and support to remodel veterans homes.
Also, the ASID Foundation will provide REGREEN resources, the
nation’s first sustainable residential remodeling guidelines, to
Rebuilding Together affiliates. REGREEN, launched this March, is
one of the foundation’s leading initiatives and provides help with
weaving sustainability into remodeling projects.
“Rebuilding together is excited about the new relationship with
the ASID Foundation,” says T.J. Cantwell director of veterans
housing at Rebuilding Together. “We look forward to combining our
years of experience with that of the members of ASID to serve our
veterans in need across the country.”

Designer of the Month |

Tricia Izzo, of Shelter Interiors, infused the colors and
materials of the beach into the featured waterfront home in
Westport CT to achieve a restful retreat for a young family.
|
 |
The client started out not
knowing what her style was but says that Tricia found her
personality and invoked it in to the home for her family.
The house is in a unique position in that it has waterviews
out the front and the back of the home and the colors of the
beach are seen throughout in the flooring and ceiling
treatments as well as the beach glass colored fabrics. The
house has a layout in which both formal and family areas are
all within view and delineated with |
|
columns. It was a challenge to mix the functionality and
formality of these spaces while having a cohesive yet
comfortable interior.
|
This house was featured on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens
New Home magazine, as well as, featured in AtHome and
Connecticut Magazine.
|
|
 |
Tricia Izzo recently partnered with Carolyn Kron, whom she met
at her first design job out of college, to form Shelter
Interiors llc. They design both Commercial and Residential
projects. Current projects include a new 12,000 s.f. national
headquarters for Wusthof Trident in Norwalk, CT.
Tricia is the winner of last year's ASID Award of Excellence in
Retail Design for her whimsical design of the Amy Coe Store
in Westport, CT.

Lunch & Learn: Fresh Designs for the Season

Kaoud Oriental Rugs of Wilton hosted a Lunch and Learn event in their
designer showroom space on October 16th. Fred, Isam, Joanne, and Cindy Kaoud
welcomed the designers with a raffle ticket for each and a delicious Middle
Eastern luncheon buffet.
Isam was informative and interesting as he explained the different properties
of wool and silk handmade rugs and how the cost is affected by the percentage of
silk in the finished product. It was particularly interesting to learn that
antique silk rugs were made as gifts to kings, which is why they are so
valuable and rare.
Another pearl of wisdom is this. Isam says that those of us who think we
should have our rugs cleaned every year should resist the urge. Cleaning
handmade oriental rugs more frequently than every three to five years strips the
lanolin from the wool and shortens the life span of the rug. So relax.
 |
Theresa Kelly spoke to the designers about the
Masland Carpet Company. They are a Green company and many of their products
are made from recycled products. She showed us samples of a new |
faux sisal carpet that is made
from goat hair. It is wonderfully soft to the touch.
|
|
Betsy McGuire, our new chapter president, won
the raffle. She won it fair and square. The prize was a lovely 4x6 Aubusson
throw rug in creamy neutral tones.
