delivering her presentation on Ergonomics and the Aging
Workforce. Arlette Loeser is the founder/president of The
Ultimate Workspace, an ergonomics consulting company.
The importance of having an ergonomics program in place becomes
greater as the workforce ages and people stay in the jobs
longer. By understanding the needs of the employees an
ergonomics program can decrease the number and severity of
injuries in the workplace, It can also lead to improved employee
moral, higher job satisfaction and productivity

Designer of the Month |
|
Robin McGarry, ASID
|
Jonathan
is an architect, and Robin is an interior designer.
They both work out of their Weston home, a 1960s raised ranch
that has been updated in the style of a traditional Colonial
Revival (as featured in Fairfield County Home in September
2005). This remodeling took place around the time of their
marriage seven years ago.
At that time, the two-acre lot was full of half dead cedars.
Jonathan and Robin had the area cleared and a pool put in. They
hired a landscape artist to plant a lush perennial garden that
offers them a vibrant floral surprise every few weeks during the
warmer months. Wishing to continue this beautification, they
became inspired by traditional country estates. They wanted
their home to include an element of retreat, although their
motivation did not involve improving the property’s market
value. As Robin explains, “We do not plan to move. The barn is
a place of tranquility. It leads us to the type of life we would
like to live.”
“The barn was an opportunity to bridge between the style
of the house and some slightly more progressive architectural
ideas,” Jonathan says. “Robin and I both do very traditional and
very contemporary work with our clients. We wanted to respect
the old while at the same time producing something fun and
adventurous.”
|
 |
Like the architectural design of the barn,
the imported Italian tiles of the dining room floor
assimilate the old and the new. They are rustic, big and
chunky, but have a metallic sheen.
This visually and emotionally stimulating dichotomy is
echoed in the interior design.
A tabletop made with distressed 14-inchwide |
|
barn boards nearly a century old is supported by zinc pedestals.
Three Italian amber-glow lighting fixtures are suspended above
the table. The remote controlled, ventless fireplace built into
the wall lends a cozy feel while being entirely modern in its
presentation, one powerful piece of ceramic bordering the
gas-lit flames. This Fire Ribbon model was the first installment
of its kind in Connecticut, done by Spark Modern Fires of
Georgetown.

2008 Design Awards of Excellence |
|

|
|
On December 13th, The Dolce Hotel and Conference
Center in Norwalk will play host to an evening of
sophistication, splendor and surprises as it becomes the very
special venue for the second annual ASID CT black tie gala. The
gala will celebrate the talent that surrounds us—the “ASID
Connecticut Chapter 2008 Design Awards of Excellence”.
We will donate a portion of the profits to Habitat for Humanity,
a non-profit housing organization building simple, decent,
affordable housing with people in need.
Klaff’s, People’s United Bank, Miritech Carpet, and Stark Carpet
have already made a commitment to endorse the gala as corporate
sponsors.
Since the contest was announced, Interior Designers, Industry
Partners, Architects and Students have been reviewing, selecting
and photographing the work that they are most proud of to enter
into this competition. And, after the tremendous success of last
year’s event, the industry is already buzzing about who might
enter this year’s contest and who they think has the potential
to win!
Although any designer who resides in Connecticut is eligible for
entry into this competition— any designer residing outside the
state who has designed a Connecticut project may also enter.
Entry deadline is October 31, 2008
Entry forms may be downloaded from
www.ASIDCT.org
The winners will be chosen by a team of select and secret
jurors, from a sister chapter of the ASID organization. However,
these award winners will be held under tight wraps and will not
be announced until the red-carpet awards ceremony on the evening
of the Gala. The event judges have been instructed to select
what they think are the very best examples of creativity,
ingenuity and design excellence from the categories of entry:
- Contract (firms of 3 or less, or more than 3)
- Residential (firms of 3 or less, or more than 3)
- Kitchen
- Bath
- Historic Preservation
- Green Design
- Hospitality
- Retail
- Healthcare & Institutional
- Product or Custom Design
- Community Service
- Student Work
The winners of this competition, one from each category, will
receive not only a personalized, framed Certificate of
Excellence but also a cut crystal statue engraved with this
special event logo. In addition, on the evening of the Gala the
winners of the competition will have their winning entries on
display at the venue and will also have the possibility of
having their winning entries published in select local, regional
and national publications.
This competition is based solely on talent and allows any
designer—new or experienced—from any firm— large or small— from
any category—commercial, residential or student—to have an equal
opportunity to shine, be recognized by their peers, gain
credibility, be exposed to the media and to showcase their
talent.
