Legislative News From New York State
The term 'interior designer' may soon have official clout in New
York: The NY State Interior Design Title Act, otherwise known as
Senate Bill S3659, has passed unanimously in both houses in
Albany.
Now the final step is the signature of approval from New York
governor David Patterson. In an effort to push the bill through
the final stage, the
New York
chapter of the International Interior Design Association
(IIDA NY) has
sent an
appeal to the design community for letters to
the governor.
"Whether you are a practicing interior designer, an architect
writing in support of your Gensler friends and co-workers, or an
interested client or vendor, your support will help the Governor
understand the importance of this issue," states the appeal from
IIDA NY. "Our city and state, at the center of the design
profession, should be on the list of places where "Interior
Designer" is a title with meaning."
Connecticut ASID members should be aware of opposition towards
the New York bill from NKBA and the Interior Design Protection
Council. There is misinformation surrounding the purpose of
Title and Practice Act legislation. It is NOT for the purpose of
putting designers out of business or creating a monopoly. Legal
recognition establishes standards of minimum competency which
are enforceable and ensures that only qualified individuals
design interior spaces or represent themselves to the public as
certified or registered interior designers.
Legal definition of the scope of practice helps consumers
differentiate the responsibilities and services of each of the
design professions. Also legal recognition enables a state or
jurisdiction to discipline an interior designer thus protecting
the consumer. It provides standards of practice embodied in an
enforceable code of ethics and provides consumers a means of
addressing grievances with interior designers.
As members of ASID, we can help clarify the issues. Also by
supporting CCID, we ensure fair representation in the
Connecticut Legislature. You can join CCID by

J.D. Staron Galleries

On February 29th we went to the J. D. Staron showroom in
Stamford. They supply custom handmade rugs and carpets to some
of the top designer showrooms in the country and we are
fortunate to have them right here in Fairfield County.
We were served a lovely lunch and introduced to Jakub Staron
who, with great enthusiasm and charm, showed us his newest ideas
and creations.
As many of you already know, he is an artist and a master
weaver who can perform miracles with a simple skein of wool. He
explained how textures and patterns are created with the tying
of a knot, and how ancient techniques can be applied to create
up to the minute designs.
Currently, Jakub is making Aubusson type rugs in his own
beautiful contemporary patterns. For more information about
J.D. Staron Galleries visit their website,

Community Service Corner |

Thank you to the many individuals, families and businesses who
have given so generously to the ASID Foundation. This
financial support has provided the opportunity to invest the
resources necessary to address interior design education and
some of the most crucial social and environmental issues of
today's global community.
Truly,
the ASID Foundation – your
Foundation – is making a difference! Whether
through the Foundation’s scholarship program or through
research initiatives which now include critical topics such as
sustainable design, technology, design for learning
environments and the needs of an aging population, the ASID
Foundation is responding to those issues facing interior
design and issues that affect us all. I encourage you to join
me in being a part of this dynamic organization.
Someone once said, "Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed,
it’s the only thing that ever has."
Together, we can achieve great things.
Sincerely,

BJ Peterson, FASID
Chair

ASID CT Forum '08 a
Success! |
|
|
|
Universal Design was universally appealing.

The 5th annual Designer and Industry Forum was bigger and better
than ever; although now we should add "Builder" to our list of
participants. Working with the Fairfield County Homebuilders and
Remodelers Association (HBRA), an exciting blend of product and
service exhibits and a wide range of professional attendees
brought this year's participation to over 300!
|
| Our keynote
speaker, Patricia Moore, Ph.D., FIDSA, an authority on
universal design, addressed her now-famous 1978-80
experiences dressed as an elderly woman and provided the
audience with helpful observations on designing with special
needs populations in mind. |
 |
|
Following this, the show floor opened to Forum participants and
nearly 75 exhibitors, representing the design and construction
worlds had the opportunity to tell their story to our combined
membership, both current and future clients. A highlight of the
show was a special mock-up of home-based products designed to
meet the needs of our clients across an entire life span.
Lively conversation, a great dinner buffet, a fun raffle and
another late night for the wonderful and dedicated Forum
committee staff and volunteers spelled success for this year's
event. Thanks to everyone and to our generous sponsors for their
tireless effort.Planning for FORUM '09, with the theme, COLOR Works! is already
underway. Plan to be there! |
