Message From the President |

Dear Wonderful ASID Friends and Colleagues
Thank You to Stacy Lyons and Jennifer Ressler and their fabulous
committee members. Our fifth Annual Student Fashion Show was a
huge success. The costumes where spectacular and the students
where creative and fun - it doesn't get better than this.
Students are the future of our organization and I'm so proud of
our ASID students.
The Design Awards judges for the state of Georgia Chapter ASID
did an outstanding job judging the eleven categories. Many
Thanks to Dianne Lowenthal, Robin McGarry, Terry Scarborough,
Cathy Glass, Linda Shockley, Joan Nemirow, Lynda Saracini, Alice
Burnham, Judy Swann, Betsy McGuire, and Barbara Schmidt.
ASID CT. Chapter raises the bar for every event we are involved
with. Please join us, get involved. (It'll save me time from
hunting you down).
Thank You,
MaryAnn Howell, ASID

Design Awards Student Winner |
Kristin Griffith, Associate
Allied Member ASID

Having graduated from the University of Bridgeport with a degree
in Interior Design in 2007, I currently work as a design assistant
for Robin McGarry & Associates.
Being a life-long resident of Connecticut, I always recall
noticing basic design details in the community. Even as a child, I
knew that living a life immersed in creativity was what I needed
to have in order to be happy.
Whether I was painting my mother’s kitchen (without her knowledge) when
she went away, volunteering to redesign the school lounge, or
selecting materials for one of our clients, I feel very privileged
to be able to do what we do. |

P.H.
Miller Frame-Makers
Peter Miller of P. H. Miller Frame-Makers and Rick Friswell of A
World of Color hosted a framing and gilding workshop on the
evening of April 4th at Peter’s studio in Woodbury.
He greeted the arrival of each designer with a glass of champagne
and a square of 24-carat edible gold leaf floating in the pale
golden bubbly. That was our introduction to his world of gold
leaf.
|
|
 |
| |
Peter’s passion for his art made his history lesson in framing and
gilding through the ages fascinating and all too short. He
explained to us how he still uses the ancient renaissance
techniques of carving, painting with egg tempera, and gilding with
gold and silver leaf when he makes his beautiful custom made
creations today.
Then we all went upstairs for a demonstration of the application of gold
leaf. No one dared to sneeze.

Rick Friswell gave an informative demonstration of how to ruin a
work of art.
The three don’ts in caring for your artworks are sunlight,
chemicals, and dampness.
He showed us how to see the difference between acid matte board and
archival materials.
He also explained the benefits and drawbacks of the different
kinds of glass for framing and protecting the work from being
damaged by sunlight. For a private appointment with Rick

Project:
Brown Residence Master Suite Renovation
Location:
East Haddam, Connecticut
This modern master bath design features marble floors and walls,
mahogany vanities and cabinets, glass sinks, multiple head steam
shower with stereo, whirlpool tub with television, and Murano
glass light fixtures.
The unique master bedroom design features
a two sided mahogany fireplace with marble surround and a large
walk-in closet with mahogany cabinets and island. The approach
is minimalist with clean, crisp lines, and a balance of warm and
cool finishes which heighten the natural material beauty of the
space. A less traditional layout lends a fresh spirit,
especially fitting for this master suite.

RealWorld Design Week |
|
RealWorld Design Week
October 12-31, 2008
|
|
 |
Debuting this fall, RealWorld DesignWeek will focus on career
development, offering both classroom and hands-on learning
experiences to introduce students to the real world of interior
design.
During RealWorld DesignWeek, October 12-31, 2008, ASID student
members will participate in one-day shadow experiences with ASID
professional and allied members, as well as Industry Partner
representatives onsite at work locations. In addition, the week
will be book-ended by a pair of online instructional
seminars-Prepare and Position-hosted by prominent guest
speakers.
This innovative program exists exclusively for ASID members-
students, practitioners (allied and professional) and Industry
Partner representatives-and has the potential to touch thousands
of members at once if ASID members commit to the cause of design
education and sign up to participate.
The benefits are numerous. RealWorld DesignWeek will empower
students to succeed in the industry, build relationships with
the design community and provide them with the tools to
jump-start their careers. Design practitioners will have
confidence that the future leaders of interior design are primed
to act responsibly and carry the industry to a higher level, and
the program offers a unique mechanism for filling an internship
or entry level job opening. Moreover, professional chapters will
experience increased membership and improved relations between
professionals and students.
To facilitate the organization of the shadow day experiences
that will take place during RealWorld DesignWeek, practitioners
and students will be paired online in a self-service fashion on
a secure website in April and May 2008. Practitioners will first
be given an initial window of time to post their profiles and
availability on the site. Once this window is closed, students
will then log on, view the practitioner profiles and self-select
which practitioner they would most like to shadow. Pairings will
be first-come, first-served, so students should sign up early!
Sign Up Now!
After April 4, interested practitioners can go to the
ASID website to sign up on their own. Practitioner Agreement
Forms are available at
www.asid.org/rwdw along with additional information
about RealWorld DesignWeek. Participating in this program can
make a difference in your life as an interior designer and ASID
member. Be a part. It's your profession.
