Message From the President |
Dear ASID wonderful people,
We celebrated a successful Career Night at Fairfield University
April 10 for all students in our ASID CT chapter. A Big Thank
You to Laura Bordeaux and her committee for a job well done.
Our speakers for that evening were informative and very interesting,
telling their stories of design in the business world. All of
them in different design disciplines, Kitchen, Residential,
Corporate, and Restaurants. What wonderful choices for all
students to consider.
Our ASID CT Chapter grows stronger everyday. Thanks to all of
you participate, together we will make it our best year ever!
Thank you,
Thank You All,
MaryAnn Howell, ASID

CCID Update

The Connecticut Coalition of Interiors Designers (CCID) recently
defended the current Interior Design Statute which regulates the
use of the title Interior Designer at the Capitol in Hartford
during a hearing on March 6th. ASID CT and CCID members Dianne
Lowenthal, ASID and Elaine Koufman, FASID, testified on Raise Bill
HB 5774 requiring the registration of residential interior
decorators.
The bill was put forth and supported by the CT
Retailer Merchants Association in an effort to offer retailers an
alternative career path for their employees. To differentiate
these individuals from Registered Interior Designers CCID proposed
“Retail Decorator” as a title to be restricted to those that work
in retail establishments and would specifically limit services to
decorating within single family dwellings.
This bill was referred
to the Appropriations Committee that oversees the State’s budget
funding. There are fiscal considerations attached to Raised Bill HB 5774 that the State would have to approve for the bill to
continue any further.
Many students from University of New Haven came to the Capitol to
testify along with Alex Lanuk, ASID, CCID President, John Arabolos,
ASID, CCID VP Legislation, Frank Giudice, ASID, CCID Treasurer and
Christy Somerville, Allied ASID, CCID President Elect. This
hearing day was full of many fast pace changes, impromptu
meetings, negotiation endeavors and did not end until 6:00PM.
CCID is ever diligent to protect Interior Designer’s right to
practice. Many thanks to all our members and student members who
participated at the Hearing. Don’t forget to renew or initiate
your membership to CCID. Our support is vital to the successes of
CCID. The membership form can be found online at

ASID FOUNDATION NEWS
Your ASID Foundation is entering its fourth year and for a new
Foundation, we have much to be proud of. The ASID Foundation is
funding several projects and initiatives for next year and beyond.
Partnering with the U.S. Green Building Council, the foundation is
working on a collaborative project called REGREEN to develop
sustainable practice guidelines and educational resources for
homeowners, residential interior design professionals, suppliers
and contractors. REGREEN will raise awareness and accelerate
adoption of home renovation and remodeling practices that minimize
impact on the environment and human health. A draft of the
guidelines was released at GreenBuild earlier this year and the
final guidelines will be unveiled at ASID’s annual conference
INTERIORS 08: The ASID Conference on Design, in March in New
Orleans.
The ASID Foundation was a sponsor for The Green House, New
Directions in Sustainable Architecture & Design exhibition
displayed at the National Building Museum in Washington, D. C.,
The Foundation is helping to support a revision of the evaluation
standards for academic interior design programs to be implemented
by CIDA (formerly FIDER) in 2009.
Plus, the Foundation awards scholarships and grants. See this
years winners in the latest issue of ICONS.
Jubilation ’08, the Foundation’s major fundraiser was held on
Friday, March 14 in New Orleans. There was a a Mardi Gras
atmosphere with a celebrity auctioneer, New Orleans native Bryan
Batt (Mad Money on Fox). He was as fabulous as his hit series,
helping the Foundation raise 120,000. Barbara Schlattman, FASID
and BJ Peterson, FASID did a fantastic job and it was a real
exciting evening. Maryann, Cynthia Saxe-Dawson and I led the
parade across the street (traffic was stopped on Canal St.)
throwing confetti and dancing to a New Orleans band playing "When
the Saints Come Marching In". Our chapter was fortunate to have
Maryann Howell and Diane Lowenthal donate 7 boxes of accessories
to the silent auction.
The ASID Foundation would like to thank those special contributors
for their generosity: M & M Carpet, Ferguson Enterprises,
Baccarat, John Todd Partridge, Ladco, Ltd., Sylvia Fullerton
Allied Member of ASID, Herman Miller, Armstrong, Benjamin Moore
and Design-Tex (partial listing at this time of printing).
I was proud to represent the Connecticut Chapter on this
Committee. Elaine Koufman, FASID,
President Elect. |

UNIVERSAL DESIGN
Creating spaces for all ages and abilities
5th Annual ASID Designer & Industry Forum 08

Design for Life
By Richard
FriswellOn Wednesday, May 7th, 2008, the Connecticut Chapter of
the American Society of Interior Designers will hold its 5th
Annual Designer and Industry Forum. It will take place at
Giovanni’s II in Stamford, with |
a
keynote speaker at 3 pm and a trade show event from 4:30-9 pm.
This meeting will bring together interior designers, their industry
partners, students and affiliated professionals to discuss the
important issues that affect the profession and influence the
creation of beautiful interior spaces in both residential and
commercial settings. For the first time this year, the event is
being held in conjunction with the Home Builders and Remodelers
Association of Fairfield County.
This year’s theme at Forum ‘08 is Universal Design- “creating spaces
for all ages and ability.” Sometimes called “aging in place”, this
emerging specialty addresses the increasing numbers of us who must
consider modifications to our living environment in order to live
independently for as long as possible. As the Baby Boomers enter
their senior years at increasingly alarming rates, strategies to
accommodate this and other special needs populations becomes more
critical.
The meeting will be addressed by an internationally recognized
authority in the field of Universal Design, Patricia Moore, of
Phoenix, AZ. While still in her 20’s in 1979-82, Moore assumed the
role of an 80-year old woman, complete with makeup and a cane. She
discovered an age bias at that time that has served as the basis for
her crusade in favor of the needs of the elderly ever since.
Focusing on products and services, her message has found its way
into the product design labs and board rooms of some of the world’s
biggest companies.
Forum ’08 will feature Moore’s thoughts and vision for the future
and help to equip the state’s design community with the tools and
resources to provide effective solutions in any design environment.
Further information and registration material for design and
construction professionals can be found at

RealWorld Design Week |

RealWorld Design Week
October 12-31, 2008
|
|
 |
Debuting this fall, RealWorld DesignWeek will focus on career
development, offering both classroom and hands-on learning
experiences to introduce students to the real world of interior
design.
During RealWorld DesignWeek, October 12-31, 2008, ASID student
members will participate in one-day shadow experiences with ASID
professional and allied members, as well as Industry Partner
representatives onsite at work locations. In addition, the week
will be book-ended by a pair of online instructional
seminars-Prepare and Position-hosted by prominent guest
speakers.
This innovative program exists exclusively for ASID members-
students, practitioners (allied and professional) and Industry
Partner representatives-and has the potential to touch thousands
of members at once if ASID members commit to the cause of design
education and sign up to participate.
The benefits are numerous. RealWorld DesignWeek will empower
students to succeed in the industry, build relationships with
the design community and provide them with the tools to
jump-start their careers. Design practitioners will have
confidence that the future leaders of interior design are primed
to act responsibly and carry the industry to a higher level, and
the program offers a unique mechanism for filling an internship
or entry level job opening. Moreover, professional chapters will
experience increased membership and improved relations between
professionals and students.
To facilitate the organization of the shadow day experiences
that will take place during RealWorld DesignWeek, practitioners
and students will be paired online in a self-service fashion on
a secure website in April and May 2008. Practitioners will first
be given an initial window of time to post their profiles and
availability on the site. Once this window is closed, students
will then log on, view the practitioner profiles and self-select
which practitioner they would most like to shadow. Pairings will
be first-come, first-served, so students should sign up early!
Sign Up Now!
Practitioners have the option of completing a Practitioner
Agreement Form and submitting it to ASID via mail or fax no
later than April 11, 2008. By submitting this form, the
practitioner makes a prior commitment to participating in
RealWorld DesignWeek, and ASID staff will post their profile
online.
After April 4, interested practitioners can go to the
ASID website to sign up on their own. Practitioner Agreement
Forms are available at
www.asid.org/rwdw along with additional information
about RealWorld DesignWeek. Participating in this program can
make a difference in your life as an interior designer and ASID
member. Be a part. It's your profession.

Atmosphere Design, LLC, a 2007 ASID Design Award Winner |
|
 |
Jean Baptiste Ducruet, Allied Member ASID, founder and
creative leader behind
Atmosphere Design LLC, won an award at the 2007 design
competition sponsored by the Connecticut Chapter
of the American Society of Interior Designers. The project
submitted in this competition was
ZEST Café and Restaurant located in Westport, CT.
The name itself suggests the bright and contemporary Euro-style
ambiance of this unique café and restaurant.
The raw space presented several challenges: multiple levels,
low ceilings and an awkward layout.
The Atmosphere Design refashioned this former bank vault
situated below street-level in a 100-year-old building to create
a set of light-filled and eclectic adjoining spaces that are
functional and fresh.
|
|
 |
Atmosphere Design was honored to receive The 2007 ASID Design
Award of Excellence for ZEST Restaurant, selected as the best
example of Creativity, Ingenuity and Design.

Jubilation ’08, an exciting event and a great
success! |
Music! Food! Drinks! Exciting Auction Items!
Good friends! and a Great Cause!
Jubilation ’08, the ASID Foundation’s major fundraising event, was
a festive night starting with the crowd carrying hurricanes and
clad in beads following a Mardi Gras second line to the fun filled
event.
With almost 200 silent auction items and live auction items
ranging from a trip to an Italian villa to antique candlesticks,
there was something for everyone.
The event raised over $120,000 and was a tremendous boost for the
ASID Foundation’s growing list of sponsored projects. One of these
projects, REGREEN was unveiled during conference.
The ASID
Foundation and the U.S. Green Building Council partnered on the
development of best practice guidelines and targeted educational
resources for sustainable residential improvement projects. Your
dollars have made a difference by making such projects possible.
The ASID Foundation Board of Trustees wishes to thank all donors,
members who secured items, and to all who purchased items. Your
support has made a difference.
Thank you,
