effective group home residence for adolescent girls. The young
residents live together as a family in a restored farmhouse in a
charming residential neighborhood. Project Return serves as along
term intervention providing a safe home for girls who are victims
of physical, sexual and emotional abuse as well as those who
suffer from eating disorders, depression, homelessness and other
traumas making Project Return their temporary home.
The annual fundraising efforts on a birdhouse auction which in its
13th year. Since gaining recognition by Oprah and appearing in O
Magazine, Project Return’s auction now receives birdhouse donation
from across the country as well as from local artists.
ASID member Judy Swann provided interior design services during
the original restoration of the historic farmhouse and coordinated
donations from clients and local businesses helped to bring the
farmhouse together as s comfortable, efficient home for up to 7
girls and their counselors. Continued support for the charity over
the years has resulted in the creation of several unique
birdhouses for the auction. As a green designer, Judy has used
reclaimed materials to construct the birdhouses. Last year’s model
was made of reclaimed barn wood salvaged from a client project .
Drawing upon the generosity of Industry Partners, AKDO and Tile
America, and working with discontinued and scrap tiles, this
year’s birdhouse was a mosaic designed after the Art Noveau
architecture of Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona.

A Winning Look
Traditional design restyled for contemporary lifestyle
By Susan Farewell
|
|
 |
“I like to design rooms that immediately look like they’ve been
lived in. Not rooms that seem so brand new and stark that no one
has touched anything,” explains Hollie Sutherland, owner of
Fairfield-based Hollis Interiors. |
Sutherland very masterfully achieved that objective in this
adjoining family room/dining room that won its category in the
Connecticut chapter of the ASID Design Awards of Excellence.
2007 was the first year of the event.
For the project, the homeowner, who wanted to update her look
but at the same time likes the traditional, had given Sutherland
some basic parameters, emphasizing that the house had to be
comfortable and very kid friendly. “More and more, I’m finding
that my clients want the feeling of comfort and livability in
all rooms, even the living room,” explains Sutherland. “They’re
moving away from formal. They want to able to live in their
houses comfortably with the kids, the pets, the whole nine
yards.”
These two rooms merge seamlessly with the use of very harmonious
colors and an attractive variety of fabrics, woods and other
materials. The choice of colors started with the sage country
cupboard the owner already had for the dining room, explains
Sutherland.
For the family room, she picked a mossy-green chenille sectional
as an anchor for the room. Because it was such a large expanse
of green fabric, however, she felt it was essential to break it
up by covering the pillows with a floral print which she found
at Lee Jofa. She chose another Lee Jofa floral for the club
chair and its ottoman as well. Both of these pieces are very
beckoning and comfortable, excellent choices for a room where
the whole family can relax.
The various smaller pieces in the family room are a made of a
variety of woods and other materials including a round alder
wood coffee table from Bausman & Company, Inc. and an exquisite
round hand-carved end table from French Heritage with a marble
inset on the top. She also incorporated another wood end table
that the homeowner already had in her collection. A pair of
natural woven hassocks with Brunschwig & Fils tapestry on the
top make for an attractive detail as well as additional seating
that can be moved about as needed. Adding even more textures,
Sutherland chose a silk from F. Schumacher & Co. for the window
fabrics and a wool Tibetan rug to pull it all together.
The centerpiece of the dining room is a custom made cherry table
from Wright Table Company. “What I like most about this piece,
explains Sutherland, “is that it has that aged feeling, as if it
is an antique.” It’s surrounded by stunning caneback chairs from
Hickory Chair covered with a Schumacher tapestry, which also is
used on the upholstered host and hostess chairs. An iron
French-inspired chandelier that the owner already had hangs
above it, adding yet another material and, a bit of drama as
well.
Here you really notice the warm wood tones that run throughout
the two rooms. None of them match, but they all work together
exquisitely along with simple oak floors. A Benjamin Moore khaki
color paint covers the walls.
While the two rooms work very well together, they also merge
smartly with the kitchen area off to the side. Separating them
are medal Nichols & Stone bar stools, introducing a very
contemporary look. It is this very subtle surprise that
contributes to a wonderful freshness in the home, while also
providing great comfort and durability.

Overview
In April, a new membership bylaw was enacted by the ASID Board of Directors which requires practitioner members of ASID to engage in regular, ongoing continuing education. This new member requirement strengthens the interior design profession by improving individual attitudes, competencies, knowledge and skills in subject areas essential to the growth and success of the industry.
6 Hours Every Two Years
Practitioner members of the Society are required to complete 6 contact hours of continuing education coursework (equal to 0.6 CEUs) every two years. To qualify, coursework must be taken from an approved provider.
Biyearly Self-Reporting
Practitioner members of the Society will certify compliance through an online self-reporting mechanism. The first two-year reporting period will begin on January 1, 2008, with 0.6 CEUs due before December 31, 2009. The second two-year reporting period will begin on January 1, 2010, and so on. Online self-reporting begins January 2008.
Random Audits
All members who fail to self-report their compliance with the policy will be automatically audited. Addition-ally, approximately 3 percent of members will be randomly selected for audit during each reporting period.
Failure to Comply
Any member who fails to comply with the continuing education requirements will be subject to a termination of Society membership in accordance with the requirements of the policy.

Design for Life |
| By Richard
Friswell On Wednesday, May 7th, 2008, the Connecticut Chapter of
the American Society of Interior Designers will hold its 5th Annual
Designer and Industry Forum. It will take place at Giovanni’s II in
Stamford, with a keynote speaker at 3 pm and a trade show event from
4:30-9 pm.
This meeting will bring together interior designers, their industry
partners, students and affiliated professionals to discuss the
important issues that affect the profession and influence the
creation of beautiful interior spaces in both residential and
commercial settings. For the first time this year, the event is
being held in conjunction with the Home Builders and Remodelers
Association of Fairfield County.
This year’s theme at Forum ‘08 is Universal Design- “creating spaces
for all ages and ability.” Sometimes called “aging in place”, this
emerging specialty addresses the increasing numbers of us who must
consider modifications to our living environment in order to live
independently for as long as possible. As the Baby Boomers enter
their senior years at increasingly alarming rates, strategies to
accommodate this and other special needs populations becomes more
critical.
The meeting will be addressed by an internationally recognized
authority in the field of Universal Design, Patricia Moore, of
Phoenix, AZ. While still in her 20’s in 1979-82, Moore assumed the
role of an 80-year old woman, complete with makeup and a cane. She
discovered an age bias at that time that has served as the basis for
her crusade in favor of the needs of the elderly ever since.
Focusing on products and services, her message has found its way
into the product design labs and board rooms of some of the world’s
biggest companies.
Forum ’08 will feature Moore’s thoughts and vision for the future
and help to equip the state’s design community with the tools and
resources to provide effective solutions in any design environment.

construction professionals can be found at
